Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre: Voluntary Self-ID Animation
Scope
Whiteboard animation | Health education | Community engagement
Overview
RVH approached me to create a meaningful and accessible animation to support their Indigenous Patient Services team’s Voluntary Self-Identification initiative. The video was developed as an internal and community-facing tool to build understanding, trust, and cultural safety in care delivery.
Creative Roles
I led creative direction, production, client interfacing, and post-production. The animation was illustrated by Delaney and co-produced by Disa of ThinkLink Graphics, with narration provided by Jeff Monague, an Indigenous knowledge keeper and educator. The project required deep listening and flexibility, incorporating several rounds of stakeholder consultation to ensure alignment with both messaging and cultural sensitivity.
Approach
Developed over six months, the video moved through collaborative scripting, community-informed storyboarding, and layered sound design. We adopted a warm, human visual style paired with gently motivating music and narration. The tone was deliberately calm and grounding, reflecting both the subject matter and the values of RVH’s Indigenous Health Circle.
Outcome
The final 3-minute animation is now being used by RVH as a key educational piece in their internal training and Indigenous services communications. The process helped build relationships between hospital teams and Indigenous partners — and stands as a thoughtful example of co-created health media.
